There is no registration fee, and participants are encouraged to register online at http://walkaz.alsa.org. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Unless a cure is found, over 30,000 people in the U.S. will die from ALS. The financial cost to families of persons with ALS can be up to $200,000 per year, depleting entire savings of relatives and patients. For more information, contact Mags Everette, Fundraising Coordinator, at (602) 297-3800. Together we will strike out ALS…because we can!.
